Rex Mingie and Missy Cooley - Owners

elcome. Located in historic downtown Loudon, Mulberry Street Barber Shop has served the community - though under different names - since the early nineteen fifties. The barber shop was started by Sanford Pope in 1953, who at one time owned three barber shops in the Loudon area. Pope kept the shop for about a year before selling it to Gene Dills sometime in 1954. Dills was owner for approximately twenty-four years until his death in 1978. It was then that Ted Watts bought the shop from Dills' widow and ran it for about sixteen yeas until he retired in 1994. Rex Mingie, the current co-owner of the shop, bought the business from Watts in 1994, was sole proprietor for two years when, in 1996, sold half the business to Missy Cooley. Rex and Missy worked together for ten years until 2006 when Missy took a job with the Loudon Utility District. Though Missy works only by appointment on Monday evenings now, she is still half owner of the shop.

Rex Mingie is co-owner and manager of the barber shop. Rex began cutting hair when he enrolled at Knoxville Institute of Hair Design in 1991. After graduating in July of 1992, he began his career as a barber on August 22nd at Ted's Barber Shop owned by Ted Watts. Missy enrolled at Knoxville Institute of Hair Design in 1993. Upon graduating, she began working at Volunteer Barber Shop located in the Western Plaza shopping center in the Bearden area of West Knoxville. After working there for two years, she joined Rex at Mulbery Street Barber Shop in 1996. Having worked as a barber for ten years, Missy was fortunate enough to secure a job with the Loudon Utility District in 2006. She works by appointment only on Monday evenings, serving fellow church members and family members exclusively.

Missy is married to Heath Cooley and has two children - a son, Jasper and a daughter, Mailey. To my knowledge, Missy has no hobbies: she's too busy taking care of kids.
